if you watch the movie..when Stella approaches Mrs. Taylor she makes reference to 'the liquor store taking away her house' which validates 'Mrs. Taylor sure seems to use a lot of ice whenever he's away'..so it is ice

The ice is for the 'drinks on the rocks' that Mrs. Taylor was either drowning her sorrows in cuz Mr. Taylor was out..or maybe Mrs Taylor was having fun with Mr Harper? hmmmm...I think they had the PTA meetings in the Church basement...right after BINGO!! lol
